A plastic pen will attract pieces of light paper when rubbed through dry hair.Explain why this happe

Every matter is made up of atoms which has negatively charged electrons and positively charged protons. When rubbed through dry hair the plastic pen acquires static electricity by gaining electrons. It is this static electricity that makes it attract small pieces of paper. The following link provides a detailed answer.

because when you rub it against hair it loses some protons then the pen is negatively charged and negatively charged things attract other things of opposite charge

From friction comes static electricity and with electricity comes a small magnetic field.

Same principle is when you get an electric shock when getting out of the car (you rub synth clothes on the cars plastics and discharge that electricity on the car's metal) or when vacuuming and dust sticks to the vacuum's hose (you rub the hose/head complex to the rug and it gets static energy)

With the pet the energy is way smaller and'll discharge pretty fast

Sorry Jen, you got the wrong particle. It is electrons which get transfered. Try this too. Run a very low stream of water from a faucet and hold the pen close, it will attract the water and deflect the stream. The water flowing through air also becomes charged.

The friction between the hair and plastic pen causes a transfer of electrons from the hair to the plastic pen (as hair is more positive in the triboelectric series). This means that the plastic pen now has a build up of electrons and so has an overall negative charge.

As this negatively charged pen is brought closer to the neutral bits of paper, the electrons in the paper near the approaching pen are repelled to the opposite side of the paper. This causes a local positive charge in the paper next to the pen and so the paper (near side positive) and pen (negative) are attracted to each other (as opposites attract).
